In fact, the part of the movie that's a bit of a bore is when Lightning visits Luigi and Guido's relatives in Italy and they speech-a-fy him about the importance of friendship. Well, up until the point where he acts like a dick and spends the rest of the movie feeling upset that he snapped at his dim-witted best friend, of course. Lightning's arc already happened back in 2006, so in this film he was really just regulated to being the straight man. And while Mater's dopiness can wear thin, it was a smart move to make him the center of the flick since Lightning is such a dry character and one of the main reasons the first film lagged. It just happens sooner here and it's thankfully gotten out of the way so that the James Bond/Man from U.N.C.L.E shenaniganalia (trademark!) can take over and whisk us through a bunch of nifty action sequences and chases. In fact, the entire Lightning/Mater dynamic plays out in the same fashion as it does in the first with Lightning getting fed up with Mater's stupidity, yelling at Mater and causing Mater to pout. There are a few laughs here and there, but mostly Mater exists to have his feelings hurt. This is movie is, essentially, Mater's tale. What's lost here, for the most part, is the warmth and heart that we adore, and expect, from most Pixar offerings.
